The Tree Spirit Flutes

Long Ago My Grandfather gifted me the Knowledge of the Flute.
How to find a branch of strong spirit, How to remove the heart of the Branch.
He told me how when a flute is made the player of that flute
breathes his heart into the Branch to become and join with the heart
and spirit of the tree. The Tree sings what is in you're Heart.
My flutes are always made from the branch or trunk of a single
Tree to honor the spirit of that tree.
The Trees that gift me their wood are  from Northern Colorado a place rich
in Native American History.
I am not a full time flute maker, though I have 3 decades of experience.
These flutes are crafted in the Colorado Rockies at my home
in Cherokee Park next to the heat of a pot belly stove, and
are made out my love of the Instrument,
My dedication to preserve the knowledge I have been gifted,
and to Honor the memory of my Forefathers and the
Trees whose spirit resides within.

The Tree

This was a very large tree Approximately 60ft tall and was taken during a road widening project. It was close to 300 years old judging by the growth rings at the base and once stood watch from above the valley. The Juniper (also known as aromatic Cedar), was called the "Tree of Life" by Native Peoples for its beautiful heart wood is as the heart and blood of a creatures body. It often grows in places seeming impossible to survive, on wind swept cliffs, out of the middle of boulders and can live over a thousand years surviving all kinds of damage and attacks.  It is the most commonly used wood in traditional native flutes. The  Juniper Needles were  used for medicine and healing and wood shavings burned in ceremony and as to heal as well.

The Area

This Piece is from a place known to my Grandfather as Medicine Deer Valley which is located near Red Feather Lakes in northern Colorado, High in the Rocky Mountains. This was once a summer camp for the Cheyenne. It is home still to many Tribes of animals such as Coyotes, which can be heard singing in the area sound files, Golden and Bald Eagles, Deer , Elk, Antelope, Foxes, Mountain Lions, Black Bear and a host of others.

The Flute

This Flute was Made using a "Block Construction Method" which means a square and straight block was cut out of the of the Branch in its construction.  Weather Checks and worm holes are stabilized and inlaid with Hematite to form Designs drawn by the tree its self and sometimes  I add a little to make native symbols appear.  This flute is also made in the old ways as far sound hole construction and Tuning Giving each instrument its own unique character and voice making it truly one of a kind in all respects. This Flute is in the key of D according to my electronic guitar tuner. The Stand is Not Included. This flute has a bore 19 inches long, and 1 inches in Diameter, The Overall length of the flute is 23 inches, and the finger holes average 1 13/32 inches apart.

Metaphysical Properties of the Hematite Inlay

Hematite is the crystal is the most recommended stone for grounding and encourages ones survival instincts and is centering. Hematite condenses scattered feelings, turns fuzziness into mental clarity, enhances concentration, memory, practicality,  and helps with sound sleep. Considered the symbol of life energy, hematite allows for more confidence, will power and boldness.  Hematite is known to deflect negativity. It restores equilibrium, stability and is also used for astral protection. It brings our awareness back to the body and helps one maintain their sense of self.
