The Tree
Spirit Flutes
Long Ago My Grandfather gifted
me the Knowledge of the Flute.
How to find a branch of strong spirit, How to remove the heart of the Branch.
He told me how when a flute is made the player of that flute
breathes his heart into the Branch to become and join with the heart
and spirit of the tree. The Tree sings what is in you're Heart.
My flutes are always made from the branch or trunk of a single
Tree to honor the spirit of that tree.
The Trees that gift me their wood are from Northern Colorado a place
rich
in Native American History.
I am not a full time flute maker, though I have 3 decades of experience.
These flutes are crafted in the Colorado Rockies at my home
in Cherokee Park next to the heat of a pot belly stove, and
are made out my love of the Instrument,
My dedication to preserve the knowledge I have been gifted,
and to Honor the memory of my Forefathers and the
Trees whose spirit resides within.

Many years ago a beaver began
the construction of this flute His teeth marks are still clearly visible on the
ends of the branch. Long ago the river shifted course leaving his dam behind, a
photo can be seen on the evolution page. The beaver was a sacred animal to my
fore fathers and it was believed that a beaver guarded a great tree which held
up the earth and if you harmed his brothers he would become angry and chew
through the trunk to punish man.
| The Area |
This piece was born of a Wet Lands area on the
outskirts of Fort Collins,
along side the Cache La Poudre River, a spot which is home to Ducks, Geese, Red Wing Black
Birds, Meadow Larks, Musk Rats, Beaver, and many other types of Wild Life.
The songs of these birds can be heard on the area sound file.

This
Flute was Made using a "Natural Construction Method" which means I
followed all the natural curves of the Branch in its construction and took great
care to preserve as much of the original branch as possible, leaving the marks
of the beavers teeth as well as all the other marks the branch acquired in its
life time. The flute ends with an area completely chewed off by the beaver and
the Body is well marked with full bites and partial bites. This is one the the nicest
Beaver pieces I have worked with.
This
flute is also made in the old ways as far sound hole construction and Tuning Giving each instrument its own unique character and
voice making it truly one of a kind in all respects. This Flute is in
the key of >>>***<<< according to my electronic guitar tuner. The Stand is not Included. This flute has a bore
14 inches long, and 3/4
inches in Diameter, The Overall length of the flute
is 18 inches, and the finger holes average 1 1/32 inches apart.
The Approximate pre construction
note of this flute is G# .
